Aprilia Plans Test for Long-Absentee Jorge Martín, but Future Contract Remains Uncertain

Aprilia Plans Test for Returning Jorge Martín, but Contract Future Remains Unclear

In preparation for Jorge Martín’s return to MotoGP, Aprilia is planning a special test with the RS-GP, pending medical clearance. The 2024 World Champion has been absent since suffering multiple injuries earlier this season. After the Dutch GP in early July, Martín is scheduled to undergo a medical checkup by Dr. Ángel Charte, where a concrete return plan is expected to take shape.

Injury History and Treatment Process

Martín was first injured on February 5 during the opening day of pre-season testing. He then sustained further injuries before the season opener, forcing him to withdraw from the Thai GP. He missed additional rounds in Buriram, Argentina, and the Americas. Though he returned for the Qatar GP in April, a crash in the main race caused severe injuries—including pneumothorax, pleurisy, and multiple fractured ribs—which required a two-week hospitalization in Doha.

Conditions for Special Test and New Regulation

Martín is now in the final stages of recovery, and his return is becoming more realistic. Aprilia proposed a regulation change to the MotoGP Grand Prix Commission, requesting private testing rights for riders who miss more than three races—a proposal that was approved. This means that once Martín receives medical clearance, Aprilia can immediately conduct a special test.

Planned Test Schedule and Expected Return Race

According to Aprilia Sporting Director Paolo Bonora, the team has the following test dates scheduled later in the season:

All these are expected to follow Martín’s return. Before that, Aprilia is likely to hold a one-day special test at the Misano Circuit in the second week of July—tentatively July 8 or 9. While no official confirmation has been made by either Aprilia or Martín, the Czech GP (July 17–20) is considered the most probable venue for his return. In contrast, the German GP at Sachsenring on July 13, known for its technical and brake-intensive layout, is seen as too demanding for a rider just returning from a long absence.

Uncertainty Over Contract and Potential Transfer

Meanwhile, tensions persist regarding Martín’s contract with Aprilia. The validity of the second year of his deal, signed at Mugello in June 2024, remains unresolved. There are growing indications that Martín may leave Aprilia at the end of the season, with a potential move to Honda under consideration.
