Bartolini Begins Development of V4 Engine but Acknowledges Ongoing Challenges

Massimo Bartolini has revealed that testing of Yamaha’s new V4 engine has begun, though he admits the current performance has not yet met expectations. While evaluations by the factory riders may happen depending on the progress, the team is also focused on improving multiple areas of this season’s bike—such as the chassis, electronics, swingarm, and aerodynamics.

He also emphasized the importance of feedback from the newly established satellite team this season, praising Jack Miller’s ability to handle difficult conditions and his high motivation. Ultimately, Bartolini underscored that Yamaha’s top priority is improving competitiveness and closing the gap to their rivals.

“We’ve started testing the new V4 engine, and depending on how development progresses, we’re planning to have the factory riders try it out. Development takes time, and we’re still in the early stages. At this point, the performance hasn’t met our expectations, but we’ll continue moving forward with the project.”

“We still have 18 races left in the season, so of course we’re focused on the current bike as well. Right now, we’re facing issues with grip, and we’re working on improvements in the chassis, swingarm, electronics, and other components.”

“In addition, we’re progressing with aerodynamic updates, and we also feel that engine improvements are necessary. Our goal is to build a bike that behaves predictably even when grip is low.”

“While we’re not testing every single weekend, we’re riding almost every week. We’ll test in Valencia, Misano, and at the Jerez test where all the teams participate. Barcelona will also be a key location.”

“Having a satellite team means we can collect feedback from more riders, which is very helpful. For instance, if three out of four riders like something and one doesn’t, that gives us a clearer direction. But with only two riders, if one likes it and the other doesn’t, it’s hard to determine the right course.”

“We’ve started to see more consistent entries into Q2 during qualifying, and compared to last year, there are clear improvements. I know Jack very well—even our first meeting goes back to around 2013.”

“He’s a rider who handles tough conditions extremely well. He’s highly motivated and can deliver strong results in both qualifying and the race. In any case, all four riders are on the same bike, so they’re working under the same conditions.”

“When it comes to riding style, Jack is a bit different from the others. Ideally, the riders can learn from each other and blend their strengths.”

“As for the future of the engine, nothing has been decided yet. What matters most is increasing our competitiveness and closing the gap with our rivals. That is our number one priority.”
