Marc Márquez Sets Record-Breaking Lap to Top Practice at Austrian GP – MotoGP 2025
Championship leader Marc Márquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) stamped his authority on Friday’s practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix, clocking a record-breaking 1’28.117 lap. He edged out Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta by 0.228 seconds. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) secured third, setting the stage for a fierce showdown among the top contenders from the opening day.
Early Drama
Reigning world champion Jorge Martín (Aprilia Racing) brought some early chaos to the session with a crash at Turn 9. While he emerged unscathed, his primary RS-GP machine was rendered unusable. Meanwhile, Bagnaia led the field ahead of Luca Marini (Honda HRC Castrol), with both Marc Márquez and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) holding strong positions near the top.
Acosta, riding high after back-to-back podiums in Brno, briefly claimed the top spot before a red flag halted the session. The interruption came after smoke emerged from Jack Miller’s (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) bike, possibly spilling fluid on the track. Soon after, Quartararo and teammate Miguel Oliveira both crashed at Turn 6, prompting track cleanup and safety checks.
Changing Order in the Top 10
With 17 minutes remaining, rookie Ai Ogura (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) shocked the field by going fastest with a 1’28.877. He was soon challenged by Johann Zarco (Castrol Honda LCR) and Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing), both joining the battle at the top.
As the session drew to a close, Acosta reclaimed the lead, with Bagnaia and Márquez in close pursuit. Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol) moved into fourth, while Zarco took fifth. With just two minutes left, Alex Márquez jumped to third, pushing Marc Márquez down to fourth—only for the elder Márquez to launch a final flying lap that shattered the session record with a stunning 1’28.117, ending the day in dominant fashion.
